Benin is a french-speaking West African republic. Different from Benin city which stands for a town in Edo state, Nigeria. Benin spans 114 763 km2 and is home for roughly 15 million people. It’s known as the birthplace of the vodun (a.k.a. voodoo) which as opposed to the negative depictions it has suffered worldwide, it is actually a rich tapestry of ancestral traditions aimed at human wellbeing. 

Five-time Grammy awards winner Angélique Kidjo as well as Hollywood actor Djimon Hounsou originate from Benin. RnB & pop star Ciara traced her ancestry back to Benin and got citizenship in 2025.
